In general, when severe oral pain is not relieved by the use of analgesics, it is called a dental emergency. It is often a rage of teeth or an abscess for example. In this case, the term dental emergency is quite subjective and depends on the threshold of pain resistance of the patient. Keep in mind that the best way to prevent this kind of situation is to go to your dentist at least once a year to intercept possible dental pathologies.

Another situation may also be called a dental emergency when the patient needs to be seen quickly in order to ensure treatment is effective. This is the case when the patient has a shock or an accident with the tooth moving or falling. It must then be reimplanted as soon as possible so that the transplant can take place. The same applies if the tooth is broken and the nerve is raw, causing severe pain. It is then necessary to «devitalize» the tooth to stop the pain as soon as possible. However, if the nerve is not affected, care can be scheduled later.

There is also a relative emergency such as a crown or bridge that is peeling off, all the more urgent when it concerns the front teeth.

There are several types of dental emergencies, which vary in severity depending on the nature of the patient’s symptoms.

Une autre situation peut également être qualifiée d’urgence dentaire lorsque le patient nécessite d’être vu rapidement afin de garantir l’efficacité du traitement. C’est le cas lorsque le patient subit un choc ou un accident avec un déplacement de la dent ou sa chute. Il faut alors la réimplanter le plus tôt possible pour que la greffe puisse prendre. Il en va de même si la dent est cassée et que le nerf est à vif, ce qui cause une violente douleur. Il faut alors « dévitaliser » la dent pour stopper au plus vite la douleur. En revanche, si le nerf n’est pas touché, les soins peuvent être programmés ultérieurement.

Il existe aussi une urgence relative comme une couronne ou un bridge qui se décolle, d’autant plus urgent à recoller quand cela concerne les dents de devant.

Il existe donc plusieurs types d’urgences dentaires dont la gravité varie en fonction de la nature des symptômes du patient.
