Tooth whitening is a painless technique for brightening teeth. You can have it done at home under the supervision of one of our dentists to achieve a more attractive smile and avoid any risk of contraindication.
An oral examination will be performed, along with a thorough scaling. The preceding examination serves to eliminate any risk: your dental surgeon will perform an oral check-up to avoid any post-care problems and to verify that the patient has no periodontal disease, i.e. gum disease. For safe, high-quality tooth whitening, it is essential to avoid contraindications such as weakened enamel, gum sensitivity or the presence of cavities or fillings to be treated. The product must not easily penetrate the pulp, which could lead to pulpitis and inflammation, and would be very painful.
For all these reasons, tooth whitening must be carried out by a professional trained in this technique, to ensure that the treatment is controlled and the dosage is safe. Only after this examination will your chi confirm whether or not you can undergo outpatient tooth whitening.
Outpatient DENTAL WHITENING Outpatient whitening method
Treatment takes place in two stages, with an initial appointment for a full diagnosis.
During your diagnostic visit, the Doctor will take impressions of your upper and lower jaw. These will be used to make the trays in which the tooth whitening gel will be placed.
Based on your impression, the dental surgeon creates a thermoformed silicone tray, or has one made by a dental technician. It is then custom-made within a week or so.
During your second visit, the trays are tried on. The dentist will explain how to fill them with gel, and when and how to apply them. He'll also give you syringes of whitening gel in a box.
Once at home, you'll be given a tray into which you'll pour the whitening gel. Once this has been done, you place the tray on your teeth, rather than going to bed, to avoid any interaction with staining foods and because the tray interferes with speech. Outpatient teeth whitening usually lasts 15 days. This can be extended to 6 weeks, depending on the initial shade of the teeth and the concentration of the whitening product.
Results are already visible after two days. Unlike over-the-counter products and "smile bars", which are limited to products containing no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, dental surgeons use gels with a concentration of 6%. This difference explains why only in-office or outpatient tooth whitening treatments are truly effective over time.
An undeniable advantage of ambulatory bleaching is its virtually instantaneous effectiveness. The peroxide gel used to whiten teeth comes into direct contact with them, making penetration quicker and easier. What's more, you can carry out the treatment in the comfort of your own home, stress-free and at your own pace. For maximum effectiveness, we recommend that you apply the whitening gel at night, to avoid any interaction with staining foods that could compromise the results of ambulatory whitening.
Another advantage of ambulatory whitening is that the trays supplied can be reused. You can use them again six to twelve months later to restore the radiance of your smile by reapplying whitening gel for two to three nights, following the same procedure.
Another advantage of outpatient whitening is that the trays supplied can be reused. You can use them again six to twelve months later to restore the radiance of your smile by reapplying whitening gel over two to three nights, following the same procedure.
Although this can be an inconvenience, it's essential to maintain impeccable hygiene when applying gel to the tray. However, your dentist and his or her medical team will be there to guide you on good practices and behaviors to avoid. You may experience slight gum sensitivity, which is perfectly normal. Do not hesitate to report any concerns to our medical team, who will be able to advise you on the best course of action to take. For a few weeks after whitening, it's best to avoid coloring beverages such as tea, coffee or red wine, as there is a higher risk of staining during this period.
